Connecting Research with Decision Makers

On Tuesday, July 31st, the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP), in coordination with the Lumina Foundation, launched their new “Policy Direct” website. The site summarizes premier policy-relevant research, connects users to policy makers (via research summaries, research briefs and research-to-policy summits), and provides articles compiled by academic fellows. IHEP and Lumina hosted a webinar on Tuesday introducing the website -  a full video of the webinar presentations will be posted soon.

Capitalizing on...Water

CEOs for Cities' National Director of Partnerships and Workforce Development, Sarah Klerk, attended the Metropolitan Planning Council’s annual luncheon in Chicago titled "Cities That Work."  One of the topics of discussion was how Milwaukee is working to become a "world water hub."  Milwaukee has prioritized focusing on their freshwater lake front with Lake Michigan, but in a blog post from the Metropolitan Planning Council, Author Richard Longworth suggests that "there's enough water to go around," urging other cities to follow suit.

Connecting Cleveland

The two main commercial districts in Cleveland (downtown and University Circle) have been connected by the $200 million Euclid Corridor Transportation Project.  Initially, the project struggled to gain support due to concerns that the developments would only perpetuate problems.  However, the HealthLine, a rapid transit bus route, has been a positive force in transit-oriented development in Cleveland.  While the project is focused on Euclid Avenue, it has benefitted a much larger sector of Cleveland.  This article by the Urban Land Institute gives more details about the project.

It’s not “Can you go the distance?” but “Do you like the walk?”

In his blog post, Steve Mouzon shows how walkability is about a lot more than proximity.  He uses the term “Walk Appeal” to describe the attractiveness of walking in different environments.  One of the main ways to increase walk appeal is to keep storefronts narrow and near the sidewalk so that walkers have a constantly changing view rather than looking at the same scene for a long amount of time.  CEOs for Cities’ Green Dividend focuses on decreasing the number of miles driven within cities.  If we could reduce the average number of miles driven in metro areas from 24.9 miles to 23.9 miles, Americans would collectively drive 57 billion miles fewer per year.
